Ancient Greece

Using precious metals as currency began on the island of Aegina as early as 675 BC.  The first coins were a convenient size, were reasonably round and flat, and were minted with a uniform weight and purity.  The idea of stamping metal with images proved popular and soon spread to all the islands and trading cities throughout the civilized Greek world.  This set includes six replicas of these early coins.
